Minimally trained Australian Army Reserve soldiers (National Guard or TA equivalent), i.e. myself, can achive 5km of pacing over very rough ground with an accuraccy within 20m. More highly trained troops regularly achive 20km plus at Canungra which is all razorbacks & heavy rainforest. A paltry 1600 m is not much of a problem even if attacked. Nothing mystical in this, just training & practice.
