The reference is actually a bit of a gag way back in TotRM #1, a cartoon called "Lost Tribes of Prax #6, The Kangaroo Tribe", featuring a nomad sitting inside the pouch of giant marsupial. It's one of my favourite bits of Gloranthan humour from the early issues.

Hey, I think this is a really cool idea! It reminds me of the Mormons praying for the souls of past generations (hence their great interest in genealogy). There'd probably be peasants crushed by the burden of paying for the manumission of their dead ancestors. And maybe there are certain positions (priest, etc.) which descendant of a slaves are ineligible; retrospectively buying an ancestor's freedom then could be a nifty legal trick to help parvenus get ahead in today's world. I'm not sure where in Glorantha this might work; does Kralorela have slavery?
Cheers,
