Symbolic interpretation seems a bit harsh. Their interpretation is True, in a manner they can demonstrate by their myths, their magic, and the entire reality of their culture, no more and no less than the mystical PoV is True. Not that one will get any of the the Kralori, the East Islanders, the Praxians, or the Orlanthi to agree to it, but from the meta-perspective of we gamers and God Learners, they have equal, albeit contradictory, merit.

More specifically, Chaos is pretty much any sort of extra-cosmic phenomena, which have an unfortunate tendancy to show up _as_ destruction and corruption.

rhwolfe1 on Broos puzzled by compassion:

Chances are you're right. Broos _can_ be Illuminated, and doing so will generally pretty much relieve them of this 'tude. I imagine that doing so is a pretty insanely difficult, thankless, and not the least of it, remarkably dangerous task.

Cheers,
Alex.
