in my experience, those players who prefer non-combatant characters do so because they find RPG combats dull.

Sure, our gaming styles differ. To me, not using any mechanics to resolve social conflicts means rules-free dice-less make-believe where the fates of the characters and outcomes of events are entirely in the hands of the GM's whim. Abhorrent really. As a GM i want to be surprised by outcomes too.
