I think that's definitely not so, whatever a level of mastery ends up being 'worth'. ("That and two guilders will get you a mug of ale, stranger.") After all, wouldn't it be a bit of a waste to design a nifty, scalable RPG, and then not bother using more than the first rung of the scale? ;-)

For example, Greg's 'Hero Wars Events' panel included all sorts of events which to call 'earth-shattering' would be limp understatement, with casual references to what your PCs might be doing in all this... Though like the old joke, I understand it's not yet compulsory...

It _would_ be cast-iron guaranteed, in any version of the rules I've gotten wind of. For the non-master, such a fight becomes an exercise in keep rolling crits simply in order not to lose each round. In a simple contest, he would have a 1/20 chance of of a draw (or a reroll, or a GM decides result, or whatever that box says this week).

Fighting multiple opponents is a very different proposition, though, due to the cumulative negs thereon. (-2's in one draft, I think - -3 per, in the Tentacles v.?)
