Both. AFAIK from his comments. The same way that some trolls historically "lost the man rune," some trolls can "lose the man rune," to be a nasty ol' Determinist. (Hell, and an Objectivist too! Eeek!)
Though, tossing out the rune speak, it's really just a matter that by worshipping Kyger Litor, their ancestress, the trolls confirm who their children will be by HeroQuest, and if they *don't* do this they stop being trolls. _Gradually._ (Which trolls probably do have a quite clear idea about.) The business with losing tusks and snouts is secondary to the crucial identity question. Kyger Litor is their link to Darkness, and without it they lose their focus and "devolve into men."
Granted, "devolve into men" is pretty simplistic -- like saying "devolve into monsters" for hoons, nightriders, etc.
