Yes. IMO, their niche is taken by hyenadons in Pamaltela, though. The stats for hyenas are in Drastic: Prax; hyenadons are similar but with a lower movement rate and higher DEX. The Praxian hyena is described as being a different species from any of the terrestrial ones, presumably because of its religious association with Genert, but seems to be very similar to the spotted hyena, the most common of the three RW species, and certainly the one mentioned in your news item (the other two wouldn't be mad enough to go up against lions, but spotted hyenas are totally demented and almost as physically powerful as a lion anyway). A hyenadon looks rather similar to a striped hyena, one of the rarer species.
