After the Hero Wars, the Orlanthi lost all knowledge of how to read or write for an unknown reason, although it's mentioned as a disease at one point. This knowledge was rediscovered in the time of Good King Harshax (Hail Harshax!) which enabled many to read the writings of the Hero Wars. King of Sartar (the book) analyses the writings concerning Argrath to understand what happened during those same wars.
