A critical is the best result possible. Thus, if you have two masteries and roll a normal success, that is bumped to a critical; the additional mastery has no effect. The extra levels of mastery only increase the likelihood of a critical, they don't make it any more effective when you do get one. This does mean that having four uncancelled masteries is no better than having three (you critical automatically in both cases), but, let's be honest, if you've got that large an advantage over your opponent anyway, why would you care just how gooey a mess you pulverised him into?

Forward the glorious Red Army!
