I'm willing to stand by mine: they're not failed mystics, they're succeeded sorcerors (materialists, reductionists, liturgists -- pick favoured term du semaine). The fact that their world-view can form the basis for a set of, of all things, _game rules_ (*cough!*) is surely proof-positive of this.
