        Elves came from Alfheim, einherjar from Asgard. So actually, its somewhat back to front - einherjar come from the afterlife, which happens to also be the God World, though einherjar are clearly spirits.

        The vikings did definately have the concept of different 'worlds', but they had a different set.

        As Retcons go, this one doesn't seem particularly Naff to me. Gagarth was pretty limited in magic anyway, and the whirlvishes (which definately seem animist) where the main Gagarth thing apart from the flying mounts.

        The flying mounts would be somewhat more practical as an animist power, too - Dispel magic was always bit of a disaster. I was so pissed when they made my cool Gagarthi villain fall out of the sky.
