Ancient technology

Hiero of Alexander described a steam-engine, but only as a toy. Leonardo (da Vinci, that is) drew diagrams of tanks and helicopters. That doesn't mean any of these had any effect on the life of people of the time.

Can anyone recommend an accessible history of technology?
