You can at least gain more knowledge from the rule synopsis at <http://www.glorantha.com/hw/>. There are also character creation chapters online there.
As for the Tradetalk writeup, remember that 'w' represents the mastery rune -- Read Scent Marks is thus the best ability of an Elura in animal form. In female form, she would use her Beautiful 2w to augment her Seduce Male 16 ability.
Presumably the elura on the issue's cover is in one of the intermediate forms.
