IMG Dwarf sailors have "learned" the Open Seas Ritual from captured Dormali sailors. Note that this learning involved long hours of the application of pain to the captured humans followed by long hours of painful application of learned techniques by the dwarfs to perfect.

Sailor-dwarf use this ritual mechanistically and manage to get it to work most of the time. As a result of this use of human magic sailor-dwarfs are looked on with considerable suspicion by their land-lubber brethren. Gemborg has a high priority programme working on determining why the ritual works as this will presumably give them an insight as to the nature of the damage to the World Machine associated with the Closing.
