The Encyclopaedia of Social & Cultural Anthropology (1996 ed.) generally praises Frazer for his writing and influence on future generations, and describes him as the pinnacle of 19th century anthropology, but adds that he fell out of fashion in the 1920s and 30s when going out and actually doing some fieldwork became all the rage.
Which compares pretty favourably with Joseph Campbell, who isn't mentioned at all...
