There's a very interesting short story about ancient travelling lead workers in Primo Levi's book "the Periodic Table" it's (naturally enough) the "lead" chapter. Not directly relevant to 3rd eye blue, but I think it provides good background material for ancient metalworkers. Incidentaly there's another chapter ("Quicksilver" or "mercury" IIRC) which is a very Cthulesque short story.
