And much later than that. The British Army still sets great store by its regimental system (so called because no infantry unit called a regiment appears on the battlefield). Infantry, cavalry and artillery regiments have different names for many officer and NCO ranks.

During World War 2, Scottish troops were included in the 51st Highland Division and the 52nd Lowland Division.

Guess which one was trained as mountain infantry? Yup, the Lowlanders. They were then sent to Walcheren. Below sea level.
