I thiink this is an important point - in Glorantha obviously horse and bison, sables, dinosaurs etc. I also wanted to add zulus to a list of spear wielding warriors.

I think the throwing the weapon is also a valid point; you cannot easily throw an axe and hope to hurt anyone but you could with a spear.
