His idea was to replace the flimsy throwing spear with a short stout spear that would force his warriors to charge and kill the enemy rather than both sides feebly exchanging a few spear throws (AFAIK). Shaka is a great character for a violent warrior hero, who cares about cows. IMO. (apart from his weakness for hair restorer)
