Trolls and slings

It's mythological. The sling is an ancient weapon of the Uz(uz), and they have strong magic to use with them. Slings are also cheap to make and easy to maintain. Bows don't last very long, and require delicate craftsmanship on both the bows themselves and on the arrows.

In comparison, the slings are cheap, rugged and reliable. Just like the trolls like 'em (concider that they continue using maces and mauls instead of edged weapons for much the same reasons)
