Brad's post has prompted some fine replies.
Here's a few extra bits.
- Uz rely on sound and ultrasound to understand their environment. A sling
stone makes a dense, coherent (i.e. more satisfying) echo in flight. Its
range fits comfortably with the range of Uz 'coherent' soundings.
- A dark ball of lead (a slingstone) is a Darkness rune in miniature, and
probably multiplies or enhances certain combat magics.
- On those rare forced marches above ground, lead sling pellets make a
tasty snack.
