The curse (as I'm currently understand it) is involuntary change on their most sacred holy day, accompanied by animal mindlessness and the taint of chaos
This used to be a benefit when it was a gift, because they kept a lot of their faculties
As for becoming movie-type lycanthropes, I imagine that this is something very different, and probably involves nasty chaos sorcery or a family curse
