Personally I don't believe that there is any other reason than his sacred duty of patroling the Great Tula. Ever vigilant, and never faltering from his duty, he travels the world, guarding it.

I like your ideas, however. So FWIW, here are my speculations.

Every evening Elmal descends to the Gates of Dusk, and the light of his brilliant torch is reflected off Rausas blood-smeared body. ("She hated Orlanth so much that she smeared herself with her father's crimson blood to remind herself to take revenge." Gloranthan Visions, p. 88)

Every morning at the Gates of Dawn he fights off the spirits of night, again colouring the sky blood red, forcing them to retreat with their mistress into the Underworld. (I doubt that he ever fights Xentha herself, as she is described in Troll Gods as being "not particularly jealous or malignant." And direct confontation between deities does not rhyme well with the Compromise.)
