I'll give it a last stab :

If orthodox mysticism can be conceived as a vertical transcendance, with a focus on the mystic's understanding of his individual cosmic nature, illumination is a horizontal transcendance, where the mystic's place in the world and its societies and otherworlds is radically redefined by high level transcultural insights.
