The founder is one Agadelos, the Prophet of Darkness. He "drew out fear and sorrow from everybody that he met, man or god" Entekosiad p90. The statement is rather ambiguous as to whether he removed the shadow from others (and then manifested it in the world) or caused fear in them.

Umbarism was the name for this heresy within Dara Happa
while Spolitism was the foreigner's version. It came
from [what is now] Carmania. In Dara Happa, it included
a strong dose of anti-authoritism. "If we are not Light,
         then we are Dark".

[...] However it is likely that [before its first historical
mention] commoners had long been spreading this doctrine
among the lower classes. They were probably the "shadowy
mobs" which were among the resistance [...]
                         FS p73

I'll note the Dara Happan name for them (Umbarism) seems to be based upon the only troll spirit friendly to Yelm (Xiola Umbar). The only other possible evidence about them appears to be:

[Denesiod] hated the secret rot of the Empire. He heard
of the insanity cults popular among the disaffected poor
of the land, and ordered it purged. He cursed its evil,
         subversive falseness.
                         FS p32
