I'm not sure why this should be so as I can think of bigger deities for the humans to worship. More importantly humans are known to worship Aldrya and this has been reflected in the Runequest cult writeups. Hence I don't see anything prohibiting the Elamli from worshipping Aldrya.

Yes. By promising to follow a code of behaviour or promising to sacrifice to the idol, you are sacrificing some of your free action (and hence yourself) and thus providing the Idol with divine food (cf Sacrifices in Thunder Rebels p61 - dunno what the French page number is).

I suppose that as you sacrifice to the Idol, some of the God World materializes around you. This effect is not as strong as Heortling sacrifices (since the Idols are so much weaker than their gods) but it is enough to frighten the Elamli.
