All speculation: Since there is some limited comprehension of difference here, I thought this event might be one of the seminal understandings of difference in the Green Age. It might be the first Sky-Earth clash, leading to the end of the Green Age and Brightface's ascendance. Dragons are like Serpents, so might be related to the earth element, while giants are anthropomorhic, like the sky gods. Alternately (just to prove that I can disprove myself), the dragons are sky critters because they fly around and breathe Fire (as opposed to the later Air), while giants tread the earth.
