Subject: Re: Who is Diros?

As Sinbad or Odysseus, I think that Diros and Dormal, being travelling heroes, tend to be largely cross-cultural. Maybe the myths and the rites are different from place to place, but a core description is probably the same in many places. I think the use of Kallyr as a vehicle is a metaphorical meaning: Kallyr's use of the star is propedeutical for the summoning of the Brown Dragon, but she doesn't ride in the sky aboard Anaxial's Ship.

http://www.celtic-webs.com/glorantha/campaigns/gwandor/saga/gwandor50.html At least, Martin Laurin's Gwandorling Campaign used her ship as a Anaxial Boat.
<<And so the Companions came to be on the great ship of Anaxial, Diros to some, Vendeni to the Vingkotlings, when it set sail again on the great Celestial River. They sailed for two days, still not feeling tired nor hungry, before their journey hit its next obstacle.

The vast ship shuddered and stopped moving. Rushing to the bow the Quest could see that there was a giant creature, a third the size of the ship wallowing in the river up to its shoulders. The creature looked like a fatter rhinoceros but had a spatulate muzzle and no horns. When it opened its mouth to roar great tusks could be seen within [4]. There was an army of men standing on the creature's back, with heads like the creature itself. At first the Companions took them to be broo but there was no stench of chaos.

The vast creature reared again and butted the ship. A great golden man, armoured from head to foot strode onto the deck and peered at the monster. He turned and snapped orders to the crew. Kallyr named him as the captain, Anaxial the Mariner. >>

It is unofficial source, I know. And Greg might use another for his Sartar Rising after the Battle of Iceland.

Ah ah! Fine image. Turtles are connected with the element of Earth in the green age (do you mean sea turtles or land turtles, here, TI?). Probably the Brown Dragon has the look of a giant (walking, not flying or swimming) Gamera Monster. YGMV. The reference to the old Turtle in Snake Pipe Hollow is one of my favourites in that classical scenario.

Ciao,

Sea Turtles, recently one of my concern about Storm Age Vingkotling and how they can cross the raging sea after Sea Gods divided the slope of Spike. I think Helerans might allied with Sofali and Diros or took some dragonships from Waertagi aside from their original cloud ships, as Revealed Mythologies suggested. But Efendi might not like such kind of idea....

In modern Glorantha, Sofali still lives in Sozganjio and Verenela, some east lsles.

http://www.glorantha.com/library/religions/cult-hykim.html <<The Sofals (Sofal, Grandfather Turtle) The Sofals eke out an existence along the coasts of Dinal and northern Sozganjio. Sea turtle eggs are a major part of their diet, though they guard and protect the adults and never eat all the eggs in any single batch. They are peaceful, but are often raided by fierce swamp humans.>>

http://www.glorantha.com/library/hsunchen.html <<Sofali (Turtle People)
Population: 5,000.
Homeland: Fethlon (Verenela).
The Sofali dwell along the Fethlon coast, where they live by fishing and foraging. They are a peaceful people, although skilled at defensive warfare. They live in only temporary villages ashore, preferring to sail amidst their swimming cousins. Much larger populations of Sofali live in Pamaltela and the East Isles, and occasionally visit their northern kinsmen. >>
