IMG, non periodic comets are known as star javelins. Taroskarla records how the first Far Walkers were led across the deathline into Tarsh by 'a star javelin and a righteous wind'.

Since this is from west to east, it seems the tail did not necessarily point away from the sun. I regard star-javelins as atmospheric phenomena, mostly found in middle air, and occasionally striking the ground.
