Degradation of Society through improperly contained Power.

Do they go mad, become Heroes, or Monsters, or does society change slightly with each failed ritual.>>

I like this idea. Explains how cultures grow into power, thrive and then disappear over time. As decadence and apathy within the society grows, improper or non-performed rites cause a rot from within. Or perhaps this is the slow creeping of Chaos into society.

Would go a long way to explaining why many cultures today are rotting from within. As Joseph Campbell said, Modern man is divorcing himself from our shared myths.
