Each D-snail is different. Some few have heads too large, or too hard =
and boney or with horns and plates, to be able to fit them inside their =
shells. Some have hard parts which fold up to fit in. Some have shells =
which expand to cover everything. All are different.
Who says their heads are not soft? And even then, maybe some have shells =
which are flexible and tough, and slide up around other parts. Some have =
no shells. Some have extra tough skin.
In each encounter with them you should describe each one as it =
approaches and describe what it does and how it reacts. Imagine the =
pleasure you'll have seeing the surprise and horror on the faces of your =
players as you describe one rolling at them only to stop and suddenly =
splat out at them, while another, upon being wounded starts spitting its =
own blood at them, with resultant chaos features. How bout one pulling a =
character up into its shell, with accompanying sucking noises?
