I am not expert about the difference of two creeds, Zen and Esoteric Buddhism.
But at least I can say the one is contradict to the other in the practice of japanese tradition, Esoteric Buddhism based on sensual feelings to the world and shamanistic practice. (In fact, some of very odd, hedonistic practice sects were from this root. (If you want to know about it, search about Japanese Emperor Godaigo.))

Zen buddhists is later age sect than Esoteric Buddhism, relied on stoicism to their body, asceticism against sensual pleasure and paradoxical riddles for their enlightenment. Founder Dharma was from India in the age already buddhism declined. Shaolin martial artists derived from the creed and samurais were fascinated by its stoicism.

In Glorantha, the difference is similar to the difference of Sivoli and Kamboli.
