Sometimes metaphors are helpful (through sometimes not).

Recall the Platonic metaphor that the worl you know is the shadow on the wall of a cave, and the "true" world is what makes the shadow.

HeroQuesting lets you see what is making the shadow and even to change it, so that the shadow changes.

The problem is that people can see different things casting the shadow and they can all be simultaneously correct.

I think that when multiple people recognize that they should be looking at the same thing, they can fight it out, and determine which is right. "It's a candle and a rock." vs. "No, it's a fire and a man." These fights change the world because they redefine the things casting that shadow as both X and NOT Y, where it was previously only defined as X.
