Merman sorcerers

Very nice.

The mermen definitely have a (pre-)history of losing stuff to other people, and this also makes a cool Waertagi origin story, and it also gives further explanation for the rarity of merpeople sorcerors ...

Probably the _real_ reason why they have so few is that the aridity and hardness of the sorcerous mindset is alien to the fluid liquidity of merperson thinking, but it's very nice to have further mythographical input to the general theme(s).
