How 'bout this? The surviving trollball is awarded to the winning team as a trophy. Different teams have different customs about how to treat the ball--some might honor him, some might free him, some might sacrifice him to their patron spirit. (Some would probably decide based on how the ball acted.)

And of course, the trollkin might well know how the different teams treat their trophy ball. They could try to help whichever team treats their trophy better--but if one team thinks the ball is favoring the other, the ball is very unlikely to survive the match. And if the ball openly favors team A and team B wins, his fate is likely to be exceedingly unpleasant...
