If you are looking for some real-world inspiration, you might try Josephine
Paterek's "Encyclopedia of American Indian Costume" (ISBN 0-393-31382-4). It
has nearly 500 pages of line drawings, black-and-white photos, and text
description of men's and women's dress, footwear, outerwear, hair styles,
headgear, accessories, jewelry, armor, garment decoration, and face and body
embellishment, all organized by culture area (e.g. Plains, Plateau,
Southeast, etc.). It might provide ideas to supplement the excellent
descriptions posted so far.
