Those of you who played RuneQuest might recall the Thrown Rock skill
as kind of a last resort for loser characters. But according to
_Throwing Fire_ by Alfred W Crosby, an 18th Century sailing ship set
a party of 61 ashore in Samoa, "where they were received by
Polynesians throwing rocks up to 1,400 grams in weight with
'inconceivable vigour and address.' The missiles were as effective as
musket balls with 'the advantage of succeeding one another with
greater rapidity.' Twelve of the landing party were killed."
