There's a very nice picture of a pair of Late Romans, sawing planks, in the Osprey "Late Romans" Book. They are using a 2 man saw on a large tree trunk.

Looks like very hard work to me!

Not only did the Romans have saws but so did the Greeks - Perdix (or Talos), Daedalus's nephew, was supposed to have invented it after either seeing a snake's jaw or a fish's backbone.
