Yelmalio and the Hill of Gold is the cannonical example of what you describe. Yelmalio gets beaten up, disarmed, dismembered etc. by Orlanth, Zorak Zoran and Inora and chaos (I can't remember the order and may have misremembered, caveat emptor, YGWV). But he survives and becomes immortal at the cost of his fire powers. If the quester wins a station they may lose the quest.
