That wouldn't work in my game. Although there is indeed no legal claim, a bloodline that received such a gift (the resurection of their family member) without giving a gift of similar value would have a reputation for lack of generosity that would make it much less likely to have people deal with them as friends in the future. Now of course, they would then have a claim against the person who killed their kin, for at least the value of the gifts to the healer.

Although the killers kin could probably make a good claim that they shouldn't have to pay more than the weregeld for the deceased.

In my game, the players would probably gift the healer extravagantly in order to be able to claim back more from the killer's kin. Then the killer's kin would have to choose between paying the retribution or outlawing the killer instead - effectively saying "He's not our problem", whereupon the players would try to have the outlaw killed, and the killer's kin would be unable to complain. In fact, that gives me an idea for tonights game...
