Depends how you use them. In a straight stand up fight animists may well be at a disadvantage at high levels. However there are plenty of nasty tricks even a moderate level animist can do to PCs. Not by attacking them directly but by attacking their supporters and other people they have a relationship to.
Imagine a charm with a 5W2 disease spirit hidden in a barn at the beginning of dark season. Sure a decent level PC could shake it off its effects but how about anyone else? Damage the community badly enough and the PCs are in trouble.
