More complex sewing, yes, but far less fabric. And when you have to do your own weaving, that's a major factor. A lot of the status value of medieval clothing wa based on showing off how much fabric you could afford to waste.

Kilts do use all the fabric you put into them, there's no wastage, whereas most trouser patterns end up with a pile of scraps. But you can still make a pair of trews out of 2 metres of cloth, not the 6 it takes for a full kilt. (That's modern widths. On a medieval loom, maybe twice that at a guess.)
