I believe it was by Brian Hebert. (Please forgive me if I got the name wrong-- I'm new to the list). Brian, could you please forward this to me? (Please don't anyone else forward it to me, in the interests of not filling up my mailbox!) :-) Thanks muchly, --Rat rking@scopus.com --------------------- From: f6ri@midway.uchicago.edu (charles gregory fried) Subject: Re: RuneQuest Daily, Wed, 02 Jun 1993, part 2 Message-ID: Date: 2 Jun 93 18:18:22 GMT X-RQ-ID: 927 Greg Fried here: Thanks for editing my Uralog write-up, Henk. I will invetigate how to improve my skills with email myself, and only bother you if I get stuck. Thanks again! I thought Dave Cake made some good suggestions in the direction of a more subtle sorcery system. His discussion was fairly abstract, so I wasn't sure how the mechanics would work, but I like the idea of having skills in broad areas of magic that can overlap with one another. Brian Herbert: I think a codified system for group attitudes for use in resolving large scale plot twists could be useful, but only as a guide for the GM. If it gets too mechanical, players will find ways to abuse it! On the other hand, I have PCs trying to introduce a new cult into their tribe; it would help a lot to map out numerically some of the factors that might make this effort more or less likely to succeed. Such situation are very complex, and unfold over a considerable period of time. It is hard for the GM to stay objective about the reaction of entire communities in such cases. Graeme slams my idea of a 'combat sense' too! OK, OK! But to get back to the more pressing question: how DO we encourage more interesting combats and the use, by PCs, of more skills in combat beside that one weapon they've trained up so assiduously?! -- Greg Fried --------------------- From: T.S.Baguley@open.ac.uk (Thom Baguley) Subject: Cult Points Message-ID: <9306021859.AA23896@Sun.COM> Date: 2 Jun 93 09:36:42 GMT X-RQ-ID: 928 CULT POINTS Nice idea. I might use them myself. If I do I'll call it Cult Status and probably make it percentile. Cult members would then have a percentage chance to know of someone according to their cult status (penalties for being of the same temple etc.). Increasing cult status could then be based on a standard experience roll (with a few variations). Initiates could have a liklihood/value of ransom depending on cult status and similarly for access to temple facilities, spell teaching and so on. I'm not so sure about trading for POW gain rolls. Maybe it could be tied to recovering Rune Magic by initiates. Initiates could have one point of reusable Rune Magic for each ten or twenty % of status. Losing status would mean that magic would stop being reusable. It has the added advantage of not getting too mechanical because the status should be closely associated with correct cult behaviour. [On a related theme, next time I referee I'm going to introduce simplified Cthulhu type SAN rules for dealing with chaos. It is too easy for players to charge into battle against really scary chaos monsters.] Thom N.B. Orlanthi initiates would start to get impests if their status falls below 15%. Storm Bulls would probably not be able to sense chaos at that point either ... _/ _/ _/_/_/_/ _/_/_/_/ _/ Human Cognition Research Lab _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ The Open University _/_/_/_/ _/ _/_/_/_/ _/ Milton Keynes MK7 6AA, U.K. _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ Tel: +44 908 65-4518 Fax: -3169 _/ _/ _/_/_/_/ _/ _/ _/_/_/_/ Internet:T.S.Baguley@open.ac.uk
