Civilized Shamen.
Yes, of course, now you point it out its is obvious that shamen have
to exist in civilized societies.
Take Duke Raus for example he worships his ancestors.
Ancestor worship (or any spirit worship for thAt matter) is a form of
shamanism. Therefore shaman must exist in civilized societies that
practice ancestor worship.

Now this brings me to a thorny question. Duke Raus would obviously want
to talk with his ancestors (and wife?) faily frequently and at least once
a year during sacred time. Now there is no shaman arround to summon his
ancestors back for visits so I assume that Raus must be some kind of
acolyte with Summon Ancestor and Axis Mundi available on a reusable basis.

Alternatively the idea (circulated here) of initiates gaining certain
Divine spells reusably would fit in here well. With Raus being an
advanced initiate (head of the family) and having the above spells
(and possibly more) available reusably.

By the way I liked the idea of initiates getting their divine spells back
on their holy days, a wonderful incentive to attend services. Now role
playing rewards the character who travels for a week without sleep to
attend his holy day ceremonies.

On the subject of shamanism and DAKA FAL:

Why does Daka Fal no longer have access to the Spirit Block spell which
was said to originate from this cult in RQ2. Grand Father Mortal referred
to it as his vote on the spirit plane. I believe that it is just another
example of God Learner interferrance and my baboon still uses the spell.

Reference: X-RQ-ID: 1079

While I generally agree about the comments on sorcery I do take exception
to one regarding the fact that a Magus can have several spells running all
the time. I am assuming that the divide skill by 10 rule will stop lesser
sorcerors from having spells with a week's duration or more.

>From the point of view of game balance why shouldn't a magus who is equivalent
to a tough Rune Lord or Priest have spells running continuously. After all
there is nothing (appart from POW) to stop a Rune Level casting Shield with
tons of Extension. Believe me I would rather G.M. a magus with a reasonable
amount of damage resistance, spell resistance and damage boosting etc. Than
a Rune Lord with over 100\% attack and Shield 10 running for the whole
scenario! It gets even worse when Issaries God Learners Spell Trade for
Shield and Extension and cast the spell with Extension 15! Yes that is a
duration of one year! But, just six more points and its a duration of 64
years (or a lifetime)!

To get back to my point.
There is little to worry about if Magi can be gross, because the Rune levels
can probably match them. After all my money will always be on the Windlord
in a one-to-one combat with a Sorceror. The script goes something like this:
Teleport next to him, trust in lots of shield to repel his nasty spells which
are already running, wack him round the head with greatsword (& Bladesharp 10).
Notice that the Windlord has at least an 8% critical chance and its is unlikely
that any precast damage resistance is going to work against 2d8+d6+10 damage
(on average 22.5 points). Of course thats just the unsubtle hack version, the
Windlord could use a hefty Thunderstone strapped to the head of a mace! Or
even us D.I. to teleport next to the Magus no matter how far away.

Finally couple this to the fact the Wind Lord is not afraid to die and the
Magus is petrified of it. After all the Magus is dead forever with no
afterlife and the Windlord has two options:
1) Successful D.I. (not too hard on a d10).
2) Join Orlanth and the lads feasting and beating up Chaos and Trolls for
the rest of time!

Could those lovely people who have sent cults, adventures, stories, useful
appliable material (Not discussions on Sorcery which are beginning to go
round and round and round) and things like price lists to the digest please
send them on to me. I particularly want Urfolog(???) and any other nasty/cool
cults. List so far is

aleshmara eurmal pamalt yelm
babeestergor gbaji jmijie praxspirit

duck-cult hykim ompalam

Anybody have any more. I am also looking for the write-up of the Elf
communication system in Pamaltela.

Thanks

Adam

Ps: Last time, nobody replied when I asked for material. If you have material
that you received from the net that you think may be useful please send it,
don't rely on other people to send it!

Actually, I believe the major invasion of Chaos entered in through what
is now Magasta's Pool. However, the comment about tipping the "north end"
"up" is correct: that's what caused all the rivers in Peloria to run the
wrong way for a while.

The question of why there are fewer but more powerful Chaos creatures in
Pamaltela is an interesting one: perhaps because Chaos didn't attempt to
"conquer" Pamaltela in the same way that they did in Genertela (both
Wakboth and Kajabor were in Genertela during the Greater Darkness) that
the Chaos forces simply grew in strength rather than wasting their
accumulation in attempting to wipe out Life.

Hi all,

I'm going to forgo sorcery opinions and leave all such matters to
wiser heads than mine. I just wanted to know if anyone had a good (or at least
average) write-up of the Eurmal cult. I'm working on a RQ2 style write up
of Donander, and thought that Eurmal would probably be an associated cult,
since they both have the Illusion rune and are both entertaining (Jester aspect
of the Trickster). If anyone has any thoughts on Eurmal and/or Donander, I'd
like to hear them.
I've heard that Teshnos is pretty famous for its curry...

Ciao,

@ Tom Zunder Goes Crazy And Enters The Sorcery Kerfluffle

@ copyright 1993 THZ is a Loony Ltd.

Standing tall over the craven wretches, Tom raised his hands and with
great chanting and summoning of arcane energies brought forth a hail of
cabbages upon their cringing forms. "Take that, God Learner scum, " he
screamed in a vengeful frenzy, causing artichokes and leeks to tumble
forth upon the slithering shapes of his foes, "Never darken my door
 again!"

 *******

 @ Sorcery Again

I thinks we all feels that sorcery needs to be varied and different. That
Malkioni are divided into many sects with really quite different feels to
their magic. That the Brithini and the Vadeli are not really mainstream
Malkioni, nor are the Carmanians. What we can't agree is how generic a
system we're going to get away with in RQIV.

Well, I think that any system has to cope with a core generic system, that
will allow me to play in Teshnos, Kralorela or the West. Examples of
specialisation within sorcery should be included, possibly a pure form of
Malkionism and one of the Eastern countries. Ken Rolston and others are
quite right in saying that we do not know enough of the other societies to
refine unique sorceries so we must allow a system which is generic enough
for all Gloranthan and non-Gloranthan cultures. Let us remember that not
all Gloranthan culture is Manirian culture. Much of Glorantha is as
 strange as any Non-Gloranthan game.

To that end I would hope for a flavoursome sorcery system, with a good
look at one or two cultures that use it, showing the ref how culture will
change and influence the game. All the titles from RQ3 should be there, so
as to allow conversion, but the mechanics might well change. I also would
like to say that unaligned sorcerors may well exist, in areas of change or
no overall controlling culture. Ralios is a melting pot where
non-religous, non-Malkioni could develop. Not all of Glorantha is as
blatantly religous as we are used to, there should be godless people in
Glorantha, seeking beyond godhead to achieve mystical power.

 @ Quotes and Courtesy

I would appreciate it if people didn't quote endlessly. The Digest is big
enough without endless repeated postings. If three people quote the same
guy that's a lot of proliferation. Not only do some of us pay to download,
but it is so difficult and tedious to read. Quotes should be concise
headings, reminding peopole of the essence of the quotee comments not
verbatim reprints. ie: >Trolls are nasty people... No they're not...

 @ Administration

I would appreciate it if people laid out their posts cleanly, using
subtitles and/or symbols to seperate areas within the text. I don't want
to read everything to read what I want.

 >I found your description of ogres disgusting both morally and
 aesthetically.

I also found the ogre write up to be morally disgusting,as it should be,
and I agree that they could be a very superhuman and powerful force within
society. BUT, no-one knows for sure, and there's the rub. Is that
executioner an ogre or just very ugly? Is the Lunar Death Legion a bit
over zealous or is there more to it? Players would only play ogres if
their ref wants the sort of campaign that would allow it. Ogres are
horrible, and part of the horror is that they may well be amongst us even
now! They would not however take over the world, their culture was too
violent and destructive they have a strong incentive in keeping a lot of
food around as well. All that nasty mating probably kills a lot of, as
does the internecine feuding and distrust that must rule their culture.

Trollpak etc led me to believe deeply that trolls are truly wonderful
people. They appeal to both smash and grab players and role players, they
have size and a truly weird yet familiar culture. Anyone else run some
good PC troll campaigns? Mine was all troll, and I remember it fondly. I
have never fully believed in mixed parties.

Did anyone marry Melisande tho? Her twins in my game were just born and

With all these Lunar campiagns that took place, does anyone have any good
Lunar maps? Could anyone scan them? I'd like to see some of the detail in
the Southern reaches of the Empire. Does anyone have a progress report on
the Lunar companion to KoS? Bet it knocks all the assumptions we've put
together from KoS totally out of kilter!

Well the players finished it, rather anti-climactically, but
I'll write it up some day and let you all see it! Thanks for the kind

Well, I've stopped reffing, and am having to do four weeks Cyberpunk as
punishment for various sins, so I guess I'm gonna have a rest from

Hey, count yourself lucky that you get some variety - where ever our party
goes in Glorantha we seem to get stuck with bland stew (I'm just a player)
which has inspired me to investigate further the potential culinary
specialties of the various regions and cultures of Glorantha. My flatmate
and I are currently working some ideas along these lines into an article for
our clug magazine.
