Aha!
We had a go at designing a pack of RuneCards a while a go. I'll
see if I can dig them up. The royalty were all major gods. If I
remember rightly the pack became a little large to play with (all
those runes etc.). Perhaps you could have a Pantheon pack or something.
How many Eurmals do *you* play with?..

Gloranthan Tarot (PAR resp. to GF):

We had a bunch of stuff based around the Gloranthan Tarot. Of course the
Lunar deck has six suits. Gonn Orta (the Giant) was looking for some
missing cards from the 'real' Tarot, the first set made back in Godtime.
This was back in RQ2 days. The major arcana adapted pretty well, actually.
They represented forces beyond the control of individuals that shape their
lives and included cards like the High Priestess and the Hierophant in
their regular symbolic meanings (e.g., life controlled by ritual) as well
as cards representing some of the Gloranthan deities.

It's been ten years or so since we were doing this, so I might have
to see if I can find any old notes...

Greg:

You ask whether it makes since to use Runes, or Runic Tarot Cards,
in Glorantha. I don't see why not, they could add color or props to the
Rune Spell Divination. Perhaps a GM could give an answer to a Divination
in terms of cast Runes or a Tarot reading. I think the Great Compromise
precludes precognitive divination, but not clairavoyant divination. I'd
be interested in seeing any development along these lines. Perhaps cults
with the Fate Rune would use Runic Tarot Cards for divination, and cults that
own the Luck Rune would use them for playing poker. Anybody else have any
thoughts on this? I'd be interested in seeing a Gloranthan Tarot Deck...
Also, does anybody else have any interesting or unusual way of doing
Divinations? I always have the Gods answer my players in dreams and visions,
rather than the 6word/point approximation. I think it's a little more
flavorful.

Best,
Jim Flammang

Can you tell me what "lharc" is? I don't know if I've got it or not. I also
don't know if I have "unencode/decode". However I would really really
really like to see some of the files you have listed as would my entire
household particularly the adventures. What is "frozen"?.

Sam Phillips recently made some comments on the role of women
in Viking society (overworked, underpaid, etc.). I think that
one of the most interesting gender issues for Vikings in a
RuneQuest setting is attitudes towards magic.

One type of magic, called _seidr_, (which I have seen translated
as "spirit magic"!) is seen by most Vikings as being treacherous
and "womanish" (at least by male Vikings). It is particularly
associated with Freyja and Odinn (who learned it from Freyja).

This suggests that a whole class of magic could be known mostly
by the women, and a few disreputable men whose sexuality would
be criticized as "unmanly" (_ragr_, _ergi_).

If RuneQuest _seidr_ is, in fact, spirit magic, then the males
would be restricted solely to divine magic.

Or, _seidr_ could be sorcery, and Viking women could be sorcerous,
and Vikings would all look at sorcerors as treacherous perverts.

Or, *certain kinds* of spirit magic could be seen as "womanish,"
perhaps anything that tried to overcome an enemy's MPs...

I welcome e-mail on this (or any) subject.
BTW, the remarks critical of homosexuality reflect Viking homophobia,
and should not be taken as my views thank you very much.

Dustin

RE: Dave Cheng's comments about the unavailablity of RQ in gaming stores.

This is certainly the case in Australia too. At best a couple of copies
of each release appear and then are never seen again. This is probably
more the concern of the local distributor rather than AH, but I think it
may also have to do with the fact that several stores here still have
mouldering
copies of "Supplements" 1 & 2, the good old adventurer sheets pads, sitting
on their shelves. Because they don't want to get stuck over-ordering, they
under-order...

Australian RQers note that if your game store doesn't stock RQ, ask them too,
and if they still won't, you can always order from the Australian distributor,
Jedko, directly!

(This is not a paid advert - I don't work for Jedko, and have in fact never
visited the showroom)

Whoops, forgot to put the area code on Jedko's phone number: it's
(03) 555-8886. That's a Melbourne, Victoria, number.
