It's amazing. A program I wrote way back in 89, thought I had lost forever
and would have to re-write, and I manage to find it on some other site, so
here it is.

It creates the ol' Judges Guild hex page, the one with the dark border,
a page of hexes and one big hex in the center that measures 25 little hexes
wide.

Just send it to your postscript printer and enjoy.
I have uploaded it to soda.berkeley.edu, in runequest/uploads as "jg.ps".
It's position may well move to runequest/programs soon.

I'd make a case for saying the are equivalent, see below...

I'll have a confession to make.

A long time ago I tried to find the
equivalent of an AD&D first level
fighter in RQ.

The approach was rather different, though.
I did not try to find immediate translations
between AD&D and RQ stats. I opted for
'procedural equivalence'. Anyone know a better
phrase for that?

One of the first things that struck me was the
difference in time scale. The basic attack round
in AD&D lasts a minute, equivalent to five full
rounds of combat in RQ...

Also, hit points for starting characters are quite
different for the two systems.

I then decided to run a 'gedanken-experiment':
How long would this fighter last, if run against
an opponent equivalent in all aspects, except for
an infinite supply of hit points?

I actually went through the necessary die rolls,
did the same under the assumption of average results,
and from that I created a "first level RQ fighter",
which would last as long as its AD&D counterpart in
a similar contest...

This was all single-user roll-playing of course, but
what else can you do when there are no other
players around?

Based on that experience I would really warn anyone
against trying to find 'ad hoc' translations for
AD&D characters. Instead, roll up a similar RQ
character, and use prev. exp. rules to create
a character with a similar career as the AD&D one.

Because of the restrictions on magic use, AD&D has always
relied heavily on magic items, while RQ has more provisions
for "personal magic". Give people equivalent Divine magic
in return for their magic items.

This really depends on the type of campaign that you run.
If sorcery is available, use that. If you're running an
ancients/dark ages type of campaign (which most settings
in Glorantha are), you'd be better off adapting/bending
the characters to fit in.

Would someone please send me a copy of Adam's RQ stuff by mail (as in paper)?
Since I'm on America Online I tend to get things cut off so sending files
will not work (or I have my doubts that I'll get it all correctly). I'll
even send back a few $$ to pay for the copies and postage. E-mail me at
gbailey@aol.com and I'll send you my mailing address. Or maybe send me a
3.5" disk (either unformatted or using PKZIP(tm) or LHARC(tm?) compression).

No; you'd get a Shield 2.

Wouldn't matter.
