This is a major change from standard Malkionism. I assume that standard Invisible God worship doesn't provide DI, since it isn't mentioned in Gods of Glorantha. All the serious discussion here lately made me decide to bring out out list of names I used. These are based upon the fact that I believe Mostali to be immensely funny, although they don't, and the Dwarf name list from Griffin Mountain which had the wonderful name Sandy Saltpeterson. With that as a warning here are some of the other names I have used. Sandy Saltpeterson Greg Start Fort Ken Rolls Stone Michael Gold Brain Ray Turned Knee Steve Pare Iron Charlie Kranks Rudy Craft Lynn Wheels It Les Nooks Sam Sure Leak The players always seem to enjoy these names. Hope you do too. eric --------------------- From: brandon@caldonia.nlm.nih.gov (Brandon Brylawski) Subject: Re: RuneQuest Daily, Wed, 08 Dec 1993, part 1 Message-ID: <9312081515.AA26490@caldonia.nlm.nih.gov> Date: 8 Dec 93 15:15:46 GMT X-RQ-ID: 2588 Regarding Invisible Orlanth: From what I learned in Phil Davis's game: The cult of Invisible Orlanth asserts that the Invisible God is part of Orlanth's pantheon ever since Orlanth defeated him in battle. IO's runes are those of Orlanth, with the magic rune placed underneath the rune of Mastery; literally "mastery over magic". Invisible Orlanth seems to have spells that combine Orlanthi divine magic with sorcery, perhaps in a way similar to certain Lunar divine magic. At any rate, they gave me a crystal disk that enabled me to teleport a huge distance (once) in order to get back home. They were rather a clandestine cult in the area that I visited, so I didn't learn much else about them. I have a question for the God Learners, Sandy, Ken, et.al. on the net. With the potential of bringing great flames down upon my person, I really liked the "Land of Ninja" and "Vikings" supplements. Are there any plans to release anything else along these lines? (I even bought a copy of "QuestWorld" way back when! ;-) ) Just curious, Rich :-) --------------------- From: watson@computing-science.aberdeen.ac.uk (Colin Watson) Subject: Acid; Nysalor Message-ID: <9312081631.AA26155@condor> Date: 8 Dec 93 16:31:50 GMT X-RQ-ID: 2590 _____ Sandy on Slimestone: > >3) I'd like to agree with Geoff Gunnar - I'm not sure why it has > >80pt acid > >To inflict the players with awe and terror. Personally, 20pts is more than enough to provoke an awe/terror reaction in me. Maybe I'm just easily impressed/scared. Is there a Gloranthan version of a base (ie alkali) or is this not part of Gloranthan alchemy? _______________ Steven E Barnes on Nysalor: >Checking the new write-up in Dorastor, >... some believe the god is still worshipped in secret, although most believe >the god was destroyed. It's interesting to see that some people are of the opinion that the cult is destroyed in Time if the God is destroyed GodTime. I'd say that the cult should still be able to worship the aspect of Nysalor prior to his (alleged) death/destruction in GodTime. Assuming, of course, that the worshippers have the insight to realise that this is possible... If a god has existed and is still remembered then I'd say folks should be able to worship him/her/it. Nysalor won't really be gone until everyone has forgotten him and he vanishes from everybody's past; then it'll be as if he never existed. >"Since Nysalor is now only a shadow on the Spirit Plane, his >initiates neither get nor receive spells and skills from >associated cults without joining those cults" Wish I knew what that "now only a shadow on the Spirit Plane" bit meant... >The cult write up also states that Nysalor has no Rune Lords >or Priests, making Divination dificult. I guess initiates could Divine if they wanted to. Being one-use, it would be an expensive process getting enough practice to glean anything useful from old Nysalor. >He would probably answer your questions with more questions. Quite. ______________ Roland M. Volz ponders: >What is Avalon Hill's policy with regards >to generic, non-Gloranthan RQ3 material? I've noticed that most of the >non-Gloranthan material published is nowhere near the high quality of the >Gloranthan products. The only exception, Griffin Island, is based on a >Gloranthan campaign supplement from RQ2. For the record, I really liked "Eldarad". I've only played it (not read it) so my impression could be more due to the work of the GM & the antics of the players rather than the material as published; however the GM who ran it for us considers it to be his favourite RQ publication. He ran it in his own (largely non-Gloranthan) campaign and it integrated really well (from the players point of view, at least). Some of the stats had to be toned-down, but that's par-for-the-course in published scenarios. I get the impression that most of the published Gloranthan stuff is really nice to read, but only so-so to play. ___ CW. --------------------- From: mcrowne@cix.compulink.co.uk (Mark Crowne) Subject: The Cult of Baroshi (Snakepipe Hollow) Message-ID: Date: 8 Dec 93 19:21:07 GMT X-RQ-ID: 2591 PLEA FOR INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE Have been following the digest for a couple of months now - all very interesting! I'm about to restart an RQ campaign based mostly on published material (due to lack of time, etc.). The campaign ended with the PCs cleaning out the abandoned earth temple in Snakepipe Hollow and in the process awakening the godling Baroshi from his long sleep. They are now the nucleus of his reformed cult. Does anyone have any information/theories, official or otherwise on how Baroshi and his new cult are related to the local earth pantheon? Would such a minor god have a separate cult or would he be worshipped through the cult of a more significant deity? Has anyone got a write up for such a cult handy? --------------------- From: carlsonp@wdni.com (Carlson, Pam) Subject: Heroquesting Message-ID: <2D063DF9@itlab.wtc.weyer.com> Date: 8 Dec 93 20:49:00 GMT X-RQ-ID: 2592 Sandy writes re Yelmalian Heroquesting: Most Hill of Gold questers don't even attempt the whole quest, but instead just get a set of golden arms 'n armor and go to the hill to seek Yelmalio's blood. Eventually a Wind Lord ambushes 'em, defeats 'em, and takes their armor, whereupon the Light Son (or Light Priest) aborts the quest and goes home, having effectively exchanged a suit of gold armor for one or more magic crystals. As an old time RQ'er new to Glorantha, please excuse my ignorance, but this repeating your god's failures stuff confuses me. Does the Yelmalian in the above example HAVE to lose? Is he possibly capable of defeating the Wind Lord? Does he simply choose to loose? Is it considered bad form to win, thereby succeeding where one's god failed? If he does win, may he keep his weapons and armor and use them against the Death Lord? And I prefer ASCII over everything else. My suggestion is that a simple list of topics be generated first (semi-major undertaking in itself). After this the topics can be farmed out in a variety or combination of ways (e.g. volunteers, conscription from a volunteer pool, bidding?). In a strange way, I think the encyclopedia could be both accurate and contradictory. The list of topics would include similar items such as Trickster, Eurmal, Bolongo, Bobo, which would each be discussed as accurately as possible while still remaining separate items. Prosopedia has this quality and is still useful. Perhaps I am thinking more along the line of a glossary than encyclopedia. Even if the whole thing looked like a Johnstown Compendium (although an alphabetical compendium), it would be useful. I'm back again after an unfortunate absence. Nasty blokes who apparently worship Lanbril broke into my apartment and made off with my computer. I've since replaced my missing Amiga with a functional IBM (*sigh*) and am once again able to contribute my slight learning to the councils of the wise. David Dunham: I enjoyed your Grazer "What My Father..." I think that you have covered the basic information one would need to run a Grazer character. I just put together a similar handout for my new Pavis campaign, and I'm not entirely happy with it. I'd welcome any suggested improvements. ***************************************************************** WHAT BENDRATH PREACHES Right Living in Our Great City Who are you? I am a citizen and priest of Pavis. My formal title is Bendrath, Daughter of Pavis; but you can call me Bendrath. Who are we? We're all part of the community of Pavis. We join together to worship because we respect that community, it's heritage, and our founder. What makes Pavis great? Our city is an oasis of civilization in the desolation of Prax. Even the ruins inside the giant built walls testify to the greatness which was ours once, and will be again, if we have the courage to reclaim it. How can one earn a living? The craft guilds offer honorable work for their apprentices. Masonry is the most honorable craft, as all acknowledge. Farmers bring the gifts of Ernalda and Aldrya to our tables. A good life can be made harvesting the riches of the Zola Fel river. Strong young men like yourselves can find employment for their swordarms, recovering the old city for humanity. What happens after we die? We are a cult concerned with life in the here and now; we have no answers about life after this life. Most Pavis cultists join other religions that speak to such questions. Some very dedicated followers of Pavis stay on in spirit after death. Who rules us? The city council has ruled New Pavis in since the death of Dorasar. Brygga Scissortongue, our elected Mayor, leads the council and is responsible for running the day to day affairs of the city. The Lunar Occupation Forces have assumed many of the traditional duties of the city council. What makes a man great? No one man can achieve greatness on his own. He must join with like minded fellows to achieve common ends. Neither Pavis nor Duke Dorasar could have accomplished so much without good friends like Flintnail and Olgkarth Arrow-eye. How does one deal with others? Behave like Pavis: join with partners to create your life. Be open to the ways of others; no one knows everything. Dwarves and elves have always been true friends to us, treat them fairly and they will prove worthy of your trust. What is evil? Chaos is evil; it wishes to unmake all of our world. Trolls are evil; they eat men and would wreck all of man's work. Many nomads behave wrongly, destroying anything that they do not understand. Storm Bull berserks do not understand much. What is there to do around here? I'm glad you asked, there is a little task we need you to do... ***************************************************************** Timeline Thread: Compiling a timeline can be a useful exercise for increasing your Glorathan Lore. I once made a timeline that contained all the (published) events an educated westerner could be expected to know. I found the experience quite enlightening, even though I had already read all the information outside of it's temporal context. Invisible God: Sandy answered a question: >>What benefits are derived from Invisible God worship? >You get to go to Solace when you die instead of remaining as a >lost soul, you get Divine Intervention, you (or at least Wow, divine intervention, cool! When I set up my Fronelan campaign I ended up deciding that the published material didn't support Malkioni getting DI. The theist PCs always enjoyed making fun of their disadvantaged compatriots saying: "Boy, I can sure see why you call him the INVISIBLE god" The canonical response was "Well, at least I don't worship an overgrown Pow spirit!" As we enter the holiday season here on Earth I'd like to wish you all a happy Sacred Time. I hope Sacred Claus brings you a mint copy of Nomad Gods, and not a lump of firebone.
