Hi All
I would like to express my support for those who have stated
That Glorantha is not Earth and we should not be so quick to transplant
things for Earth to Glorantha (frex. games although I will forgive the Issaries Trading Sticks game). While Earth analoges may be useful for out understanding of how Glorantha works, I would hate to see Glorantha cheapened by the whole-
sale transplantation of concepts that occurs in some other FRPGs.

On a second similar theme; why is everyone so worried about whether
Humans in Glorantha have Iron in their blood. Remember that in Glorantha
the metal which we refer to as iron (and all the others for that matter) is
NOT the same substance as terrestrial iron, thus all the arguements about
the relative density/ magnetic properties/ chemical compounds is irrelevant!

Remember this is a fantasy setting we are talking about, magic is REAL
and thus we should be a little more careful about using real-world knowledge.
It may transpose, it may be useful for aiding understanding, then again it may
not...

I agree that we should avoid "stealing" things directly from this world for
use in Glorantha. But unless we know what *kind* of sport or game we're
talking about, there's precious little point in trying to write anything.

For my Carmanian work, I'm assuming that the game of 'ravenkaaz' played in
the West Reaches is analogous to Chess. It has at least one 'king' (look at
Welsh gwyddbwll to see a game with *only* one king), and several 'pawns' as
its pieces. One of the endings for the game is known as "The King is Dead"
(Shah-maat in Old Carmanian, or 'checkmate' in the vernacular) -- this is
also the Carmanian name for the Battle of the Four Arrows of Light. The old
Carmanian sets had black and white pieces; modern Lunar sets have red and
black. (Playing with red and white opposed is heretical, and banned).

This would imply that *another* form of Chess is played in the West, where
the Carmanians came from, and that this game probably has black and white
pieces -- but beyond that, I would not like (and do not need) to theorise.

Joerg: how do you get up into the Middle Air, without a spiral? She 'danced
her last dream' before there was a Moon, after all. I see a possible clash
between mystical and institutional Lunar religion: the former follows the
acts of the Goddess in her life, the latter the precepts of the Lunar Way
taught by her followers and descendents. Glamour and Torang as the Baghdad
and Mecca of Lunar religion.

A recommendation to everyone: rush out and buy Ian Dennis's excellent pair
of books, "Bagdad" and "The Prince of Stars". For inexplicable reasons I've
found them remaindered in the UK, so buy them fast before they're pulped!
The spirit of the Arabian Nights lives on; I've also found them very useful
as a way of investigating and illuminating the Lunar Way. (All this IMHO).

It strikes me as odd that a race of chaotic beings would have such a
uniform and absolute trait. I think chaos would notice this and create
an occasional abomination (female) just to be... chaotic.

There was a scenario that never got played out in an old campaign of mine
that had a female broo that bred profusely. Sort of like the queen alien
in Aliens. In addition, male broos in the area could sense this and made
a bee line from all over the countryside towards her. Sooner or later some
smart person would point out these strange travelling patterns of broos and
tell some brave (i.e. stupid) adventurer.

I just located Carmania on a map. It's south of Parthia, and includes a
city called Alexandria. Today it's part of Iran.

I was all set to borrow some of the fostering tables from Pagan Shore to
use in Sartar, but didn't see any references in King of Sartar to the
practice of sending your kids as foster children to another family. Do the
Sartarites (Orlanthi) do this?

I noticed (in KoS) that "secret murder" is a capital crime. This is
probably from Icelandic justice. If you killed someone, you had to ride to
the nearest stead and announce the killing. If you didn't, the penalties
were much greater.

Subject: Yelmalian Tactics

As far as I can see the mix of Yelmalian weapons and capacity most closely
approximates Greece at the time of it's conquest by Alexander (but with greater
emphasis on bows) rather than ancient celts / scythians / homeric period
greeks.

The Sun Dome Templars are true phalangites (in the manner of Alexanders
Macedonian veterans), armed with pike and well drilled, while other Yelmalians
are more like the hoplites who can range from irregular bodies of armoured
citizen foot (such as Lydians with spear and javelin) to drilled regulars (such
as Spartans), but without the special formations / depth of phalangites.

The hill barbarian Yelmalians are more like the Illyrian enemies of Alexander,
with lightly armoured spearmen fighting in rough terrain, who should be capable
of ambushing with a hail of thrown javelins (or bows).
