Just to give a different take on what is a hero, I'll say that a hero is any character that someone finds interesting enough to play. If someone wants to play a big strong dumb fighter, then that fighter is a hero. A hero may be a stereotype or unique, silly or profond, etc. The fact that a player takes an interest in a character makes that character a hero, just like a God taking an interest in an individual makes that individual something special.

Of course I have completly side steped the whole question of what makes characters interesting to people :-)
