TR question on disciples..

just got my copy of Thunder Rebels after much running about and am somewhat confused by these apparently (to me anyway) contradictory statements on p12.

"A disciple may never worship or use the magic of other gods, not even
aspects of the same god."

and on the same page,

"The disciple may learn any affinity from any subcult of his god or aspect
at normal HP cost",

am I missing summit? If anyone can clarify, I'd be grateful.
